Though certainly not approaching Omar Minaya territory, Brian Cashman took some heat this offseason for not retaining Hideki Matsui. It was no secret the Yankees felt Matsui's knees, which kept him from playing any games in the field last season, were only getting worse. Matsui's first meeting this spring with reporters covering the Angels backed up the Yankees' perspective.
"To be honest, my knees aren't 100 percent," Matsui said Friday.
Not a good sign in February.
*** Here at Yankees camp the news of the day, at least before the day has started, is CC Sabathia throwing his first bullpen session of the spring. On Wednesday Joe Girardi said his plan for his starters this spring would be different than past springs because of the heavy workload required of them last postseason.
“We want to ease all these guys into it to make sure they’re absolutely physically prepared to go out and have that same kind of workload,” Girardi said.
Sabathia, speaking to a few of us earlier in the week at the minor league complex, said simply: "I’ll be ready."
