Good question during the pregame on YES: Do you use Mariano Rivera for a four-out save for a second consecutive night?
Maybe not so good a question, but rather one with an obvious answer. Why on Earth would you not? Rivera looked like he barely broke a sweat last night as he broke all those bats. Adrenaline gets him to kick into a completely new gear in October (and November). And that’s really impressive.
John Smoltz made a great point last night, saying that if you’re the other team, you start counting outs. As in, “Uh-oh, only five outs or four outs or three or two until Rivera.”
Joe Girardi had said earlier that he would be wary of four-out saves from Mo. But after the game, he admitted that it’s one thing to sit at the podium before a game and say you’re going to be careful. When you’re in the dugout in the eighth inning and know the greatest closer ever is out in your bullpen, you throw “careful” out the window.
Come to think of it, that’s a non-question for the rest of the postseason. If the Yankees really need four outs, Enter Sandman.
