Tonight made it one week since Alex Rodriguez hit his 599th home run and the chase for 600 continues tomorrow night in St. Petersburg when the Yankees will have much more important things on their minds. A-Rod included.
“It’s been great,” A-Rod said of the week since 599. “We’ve been playing good baseball, winning baseball. The thing to remember is when I hit this, nothing’s going to change. We’re in the middle of a pennant race and we’re just trying to play good baseball.”
And while Rodriguez wasn’t at his best this week in Cleveland — 3-for-17 in the series — the Yankees (65-36) head to St. Petersburg for their big series against the Rays in pretty good shape, having won three of four here and three of four before that against the Royals.
“There’s no doubt they’re important games, absolutely huge, but you don’t want to put too much stress on a series like that,” Nick Swisher said before the game. “I think the one thing we have to do is just continue doing what we’re doing and that’s just going out and playing great ball every day.”
As for the questions about 600, Joe Girardi smiled.
“I guess we’ll talk about it [No. 600] again tomorrow,” he said. “We all hoped it would happen here, it didn’t, so we move on to the next city.”
