Phil Hughes, the Yankees No. 3 starter who has made plenty of headlines this season with three bad starts and lack of velocity on his fastball, will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, the Yankees announced Friday.

Hughes will stay with the team during his time on the DL, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. He said Hughes has a "dead arm" right now and was replaced on the roster by right-hander Lance Pendleton.

Bartolo Colon will take Hughes' spot in the rotation for the time being. Colon has relieved Hughes in each of his three starts. Colon is 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.

In three starts, Hughes is 0-1 with a 13.94 ERA. Hughes has allowed 16 earned runs on 19 hits (four home runs) and four walks in 10.1 innings.
