Another day, another injury for Joe Girardi to deal with.

Said Girardi, "We need a bubble."

Raul Ibañez suffered a cracked tooth and a lacerated lip while trying to dodge A.J. Pierzynski's ninth-inning foul ball in the Yankees' dugout Sunday. Ibañez, who served as the DH, was checked out at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

"The ball went into the dugout," Girardi said. "He went to get out of the way and he hit the bench in front of him, and he cracked his tooth."

Ibañez is expected to join the Yankees in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Mondayfor the start of their seven-game road trip.

A-Rod sits

Alex Rodriguez wasn't in the starting lineup for the second time in the past week. Girardi said he's trying to keep him healthy for the second-half run.

"I think that's important and we are going to go to three days on turf," Girardi said, referring to the Yankees' three-game series against the Rays at Tropicana Field beginning Monday night. "Then we are going to have a day off and we are going to have a split doubleheader on Saturday [in Boston]. I'm doing what I can to keep him fresh."

Yankees get Qualls

The Yankees acquired righthanded reliever Chad Qualls from the Phillies for a player to be named or cash considerations. Qualls, 33, was 1-1 with a 4.60 ERA in a team-high 35 relief appearances this season before being designated for assignment Thursday. To make room, the Yankees designated Matt Antonelli for assignment.
