Throughout George Steinbrenner's rule of the Yankees universe, there was always one audience he tried to keep a positive relationship with: the fans. In the wake of Steinbrenner's death on Tuesday, his family said thank you to that fan base for its support.

"We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for the many kind words of condolence," a statement released on Wednesday from the Steinbrenner family said. "We have been deeply moved by the generous outpouring of love and affection for George."

The family will hold a private service for Steinbrenner, though a public memorial will be planned with details to be announced next week.

Though known for generating back-page headlines, Steinbrenner also had a less public side of making charitable donations and helping those in need. Stories about his generosity are being told by those who knew him best, and the Steinbrenner family is apparently keeping up with that spirit.

According to the statement they request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to any of the following charities: the Silver Shield Foundation, Special Operation Warrior Foundation, the Gold Shield Foundation of Tampa, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay and in support of Bronx based Boys and Girls Clubs.
