ARLINGTON, Texas -- Neftali Feliz was one baseball's best closers this season, posting a 2.73 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and compiling 71 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings.
But when everything was falling apart for the Rangers in the eighth inning, manager Ron Washington said he wasn't even tempted to go his best reliever.
"He's never done anything like that," Washington said. "I wouldn't do that. I had the people I wanted in the game. They didn't get it done. It happens."
Feliz actually threw two innings three times during the regular season - including against the Yankees August 10 when he received the win in a 4-3 victory in 10 innings - though none of those three appearances were in a save situation.
But he did pick up a four-out save twice this season.
