The Yankees traded two-time most valuable player Roger Maris to the Cardinals for third baseman Charley Smith. Maris, who hit 203 homers in seven seasons with the Yankees, helped the Cardinals win the World Series the next season and another pennant the following year. Smith batted .224 in his two seasons with the Yankees and .239 in his 10-year career. He hit .266 with 10 homers and 43 runs batted in with the Cardinals in 1966 after hitting 36 homers in two seasons with the Mets.
