The Boss gets banned

George Steinbrenner was handed a lifetime ban from baseball after it was discovered he had paid Howie Spira $40,000 to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield. Winfield had sued the Yankees owner in 1989 for failing to pay $300,000 to the Winfield Foundation, as was agreed upon in the slugger's contract. Commissioner Fay Vincent barred Steinbrenner from running the franchise, but The Boss was reinstated in 1993. It was the second time that Steinbrenner had received such a punishment from Major League Baseball. He served a 15-month suspension in 1974 after pleading guilty to making illegal contributions to Richard Nixon's re-election campaign.
