The Yankees held a brief pregame ceremony Sunday honoring Alex Rodriguez for his 3,000th hit. Lou Piniella, his first major league manager, appeared in a video saying that he and his wife "consider you part of our family," congratulating him and urging him to lead the Yankees to the pennant.

Lonn Trost, the team's chief operating officer, presented Rodriguez with a crystal etching with the details of his 3,000th hit. Hal Steinbrenner presented engraved rings for the designated hitter's two daughters, who were on the field with him.
