Yankees morning links: Javy gets the 'W' vs. A's

Javier Vazquez only lasted 5 1/3 innings, but he came away with his first win of the season in a 7-3 decision at Oakland. As Newsday beat writer Erik Boland reports, it's a step in the right direction for the player Yankees fans have worried about most.

After they finish up on the West Coast, the Yankees head for Baltimore, which conveniently puts them in position to make a White House visit with President Barack Obama on Monday in Washington, D.C. to celebrate their 27th world championship.

Manager Joe Girardi rewarded the outstanding play of leftfielder Brett Gardner by keeping him in the lineup against Oakland lefty Gio Gonzalez last night. Gardner went 0 for 3 with a strikeout, so, we'll see where the platoon in left with Marcus Thames and Randy Winn goes from here.
