Alexander Figueredo, a 20-year-old Yankees pitching prospect, was shot to death in his native Venezuela on Nov. 27, according to multiple published reports.
Figueredo missed the 2016 season on the suspended/restricted list, according to a report in the New York Post, though it’s unclear why the lefthanded pitcher was sidelined. The report also indicated that Figueredo suffered multiple gunshot wounds at a party in Guacara.
Though he was not considered a top prospect, Figueredo enjoyed some success when he last pitched in 2015. In 12 games (11 starts) in the Dominican Summer League, he posted a 1.89 ERA. He struck out 52 and walked 22 in 57 innings.
