Phil Hughes (14-5, 3.94 ERA) looks to help the Yankees take the four-game series and notch his 15th win of the season against Rick Porcello (5-10, 5.53 ERA) in Thursday's matinee affair.
Porcello, a New Jersey native, returns to Yankee Stadium, where his dad used to take him to games as a kid, with hopes of building on his seven solid innings of two-run ball last Saturday against the White Sox. The second-year player didn't get a decision, but the Tigers got a comeback win. Porcello has a 5.06 ERA in 10 innings against the Yankees.
Hughes earned win No. 14 in his last outing, throwing six innings and allowing three runs, though he struggled and ceded nine hits. He forced the Royals' hitters to put the ball in play, finishing with one walk and no strikeouts. Hughes is 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA in his last three starts against the Tigers.
