GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- Long Island Lutheran never recovered from a first-quarter blitz and fell to Irvington, 70-42, Friday in the state Federation Class B girls semifinal game.
The Bulldogs from Westchester County used a pressing defense and fastbreak offense to open a 25-4 lead after the first quarter. “What we didn’t want to happen, happened,” Lutheran coach Rich Slater said. “We didn’t want a track meet and they started in a sprint.”
Tara Gabelman was Irvington’s star, scoring 23 points on 10 of 15 field goals and 3 for 3 from the foul line. She also snared nine rebounds and blocked four shots. Three other Bulldogs scored 12 points each and one of them, Alexis Martins, added 14 rebounds.
Guard Paige Kriftcher played a fine all-around game for LuHi scoring 15 points and making three steals. Six-two center Jessica DeNicola scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
Irvington (25-1) plays for the Federation title on Saturday. Lutheran finished 20-4.
