Darko tells Timo: Don't be like me

Darko Milicic and Timofey Mozgov have very little in common, aside from that they are both very tall Europeans. Milicic came into the league as a 19 year old and the No. 2 pick in the draft and Darko hasn't run nearly as hard on the court as he has from that lofty selection.

Despite his status as an all-time draft bust, one thing I learned in the short time Darko was a Knick is that he can be engaging and he's often sincere. Or he's full of it and sells it really well.

(He actually seems perpetually miserable. For instance, when I ran into him on the sidewalk in Paris, he greeted me with a warm smile and handshake and at the end of a brief chat I asked him if he's happier now with Minnesota. He frowned, shrugged and said, "Four more years.")

After the Knicks loss to the T-Wolves on Wednesday, Milicic said he was impressed with Mozgov, the 24 year old center who struggled with foul trouble in the game, and agreed that Mozgov, with good size, length and athleticism, was "like me a few years ago."

So I asked Darko if he had any advice for Timo as he enters the league.

"Just do the opposite [of what] I did," Milicic said. "I don't know how it's going to be for him, if he's going to play a lot or not going to play at all . . . When I didn't play, i just stepped aside. I did work a little, but to become a good player in the NBA, you have to work a lot. And I didn't do it. I just didn't do it."

* - The Knicks have their annual open practice on Sunday. This year it will take place at the Garden and it sounds like all of the free admission tickets are gone. The team is selling a limited amount of $10 tickets for every home game this season. The only requirement is you can only purchase them at the Garden box office this weekend -- starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday -- and you have to have a child or a student present.

* - For those who are DISH Network subscribers who are without MSG Network, the Knicks have a website set up,, where you can enter a sweepstakes to win tickets to games in the month of October.
