OAKLAND, Calif. — Game 1 of the NBA Finals wasn’t close after the Warriors opened the second half with a 13-0 run to push their lead to 21 points on their way to a 113-91 win over the Cavaliers on Thursday night.
But the entertainment value remained high, in part because television cameras focused on several courtside exchanges between singer Rihanna, a Cavs fan, and Kevin Durant, who led the Warriors with 38 points.
At one point, the word “Brick!” could be heard coming from the area where Rihanna was sitting when Durant missed a foul shot. Durant made the next and appeared to stare her down. A video posted on ESPN shows it was a woman sitting next to Rihanna who yelled “Brick!”
The same thing occurred when Durant hit a three-pointer from almost directly in front of Rihanna’s courtside seat and then turned to look at her as he backed up the court.
Asked about that staredown, Durant shook his head and said, “I don’t even remember that.”
Told that social media was buzzing about the exchanges, he shrugged and said, “Really?”
Steph Curry, who was sitting next to Durant at the podium, smiled and warned him, “Don’t get into that trap, man.”
Durant said, “Yeah, I won’t get into that. I’m cool.”
As an aside to reporters, Durant added, “Have fun with that.”
Twitter users were entertained. Many compared it with the banter Reggie Miller had with Spike Lee. Call it the game outside the game.
