Billy King's thought process regarding his star free agent point guard hasn't changed one bit over these last few weeks.
The Nets GM thinks his chances of re-signing Deron Williams are relatively good and should know if that will be the case not long after free agency kicks off at midnight July 1.
"I’ll stick with the same thing: I haven’t wavered or changed," King said. "I’m not over confident. I’m not any less confident. I just feel pretty good."
Willams, coincidentally, popped his head into the interview room while King was addressing the media today at the team's practice facility here in East Rutherford, N.J., no doubt looking to make sure he was seen. There are reports that he plans on choosing either the Nets or his hometown Mavericks.
King didn't deny Williams' decision is going to be a huge one for the franchise either way.
"It is big," he said. "I won’t downplay it. It’s important for Deron. It’s important for the franchise. But when the decision is made, I think it’ll be a decision that’s best for his family. And we’ll act accordingly."
What if Williams choose to go elsewhere?
"You go on to the next play," King said. "I’ll be prepared, just like when Carmelo [Anthony] went to the Knicks, I went on to the next play. So we’re prepared to go to the next play. I’d like that play to be a positive one, but we’re prepared. We have scenarios, contingency plans. So we’ll be OK."
