The Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities (LIABC&C) tournament is back. The venue has changed, though, as the six-year-old tournament will take place on August 13, 14, 20 and 21 at Gleason's Gym, located on 77 Front St. in Brooklyn.
More tahn 200 fighters from the NY metro area will participate for amateur glory.
The LIABC&C isn't just about putting on tournaments. Here's a release on LIABC&C's recent work in local communities, including an attempt to bring amateur boxing to Long Island high schools.
On Friday, April 8th, 2011, the Long Island Amateur Boxing Avenue Championships and Charities, Inc formally donated to the Uniondale High over $2,000 dollars in boxing equipment. The donation was an integral part of the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities’ (LIABC&C) statewide campaign to get boxing re-established in High Schools throughout Long Island.
Mr. Michael Carryl is the President of the LIABC&C. He is also a testament of the positive role boxing can play in shaping and preparing an individual for success in life. Mr. Carryl is a graduate of Columbia University, and he currently works as an Occupational Therapist.
He has pursued boxing since College and was a regular participant in the New York State Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament. Mr. Carryl is a powerful advocate of boxing and the LIABC&C has utilized it as a major tool in its campaign against gang violence and teenage and adult obesity. As such, the LIABC&C’s commitment to working with Dr. Jonathan Jefferson, Athletic Department Director, and Mr. Steve Solomon, Athletic Department Coach, was consistent with its mission of empowering young adults by using boxing to teach them the values of responsibility, delayed gratification, and the transformative power of education.
The LIABC&C is looking forward to working with the Board of Directors and the Administrative leadership of Uniondale High School to establish a viable boxing program. We are also confident that with the assistance of Dr. Jefferson and Mr. Solomon, the boxing program in Uniondale High School will win the support of parents and students.
The LIABC&C has successfully won the support of several elected officials and sport leaders in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. As such, to learn more about our programs and events please visit us at www.liamateurboxing.com.
