We are moments away from the main event of Paulie Malignaggi (27-3, 5 KOs) vs. Amir Kahn (22-1, 16 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round 140-pound bout. It's clearly a pro-Malignaggi crowd. All of Brooklyn seems to be here.
This is a huge fight for both boxers. Malignaggi made short work of Juan Diaz in their second fight last December. Since changing trainers, Malignaggi has been all business. He'll need to be if he is to avoid the wrath of Khan (pun intended).
Khan, the WBA 140-pound champ, has the power to knock out any 140-pounder. But Malignaggi has the speed and the chin (see his fight with Cotto) to withstand it. The question is how many shots can he take? The question for Khan is will he be able to catch up with Malignaggi.
Malignaggi has the better track record in terms of quality fights (Juan Diaz twice, Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, Lovemore N'dou twice). This will be a true test for Khan.
Round 1: It was an active first round for both fighters. Malignaggi was bouncing, but Khan wasn't intimidated. Both fighters landed some good shots. Malignaggi's jab was effective, but Khan landed the cleaner power shots. Khan wins 10-9.
Round 2: Khan is matching Malignaggi step for step. He's also landing his left jab and setting up his right. Malignaggi is landing his jab at times, but there isn't enough on it to hurt Khan. Khan wins 10-9.
Round 3: Malignaggi landed a stiff jab at the 2:00 mark. He seems to be adjusting a bit. Malignaggi landed a nice left hook after a break. Khan has stood his ground well. Malignaggi landed a nice combo with about 25 seconds to go to win the round. Malignaggi wins 10-9.
Round 4:Khan took control with his jab very early in this round. Malignaggi came back with his jab and a couple of combos, but Khan came right back and ended the round with a solid right. Khan wins 10-9.
Round 5: It was another round of the Khan left-jab show. Malignaggi is having issues getting out of the way of that jab. The big shot was a overhand right with 28 seconds to go by Khan. He followed that with a right rook and another jab. Khan wins 10-9.
AFTER FIVE ROUNDS KHAN LEADS 4-1.
Round 6:Khan's quickness is a suprise. His left hand is moving at lightspeed and Malignaggi has paid for it the entire bout. Khan landed a big right with 59 seconds left and a big combo with 39 seconds to go. Malignaggi may survive, but it won't be pretty. Khan wins 10-9.
Round 7:It's getting easier for Khan with each passing round. Malignaggi's shots don't have the power behind him. Malignaggi will need a lucky punch in this one. Khan put an exclamation point on the round by landing a serious combo with 17 seconds left. Khan wins 10-9.
Round 8: Khan is rolling now. It's anyone's guess how long Malignaggi will last. Malignaggi was on the receiving end of an accidental elbow. He also was on the receiving end of a lot of jabs. Khan wins 10-9.
Round 9: Khan peppered Malignaggi with a little bit of everything and staggered the "Magic Man" with a hard right with 10 seconds to go. Malignaggi was saved by the ropes. Khan wins 10-9.
Round 10: Khan made his presence felt again with a hard combo with two minutes left. Khan doesn't appear to be fazed by anything Malignaggi is throwing. His jab is still crisp and accurate and his gloves are still up, displaying his great condition. Khan wins 10-9.
Round 11: The doctors nearly stopped the fight before the 11th, but Malignaggi talked them out of it. It's a moot point now. The bout was stopped at the 1:25 mark in the 11th.
Khan dominated the fight. It wasn't even close. Khan is the real deal.
