The Super Six truly presented us with a wild one tonight on Showtime. Andre Dirrell dropped, cut and pretty much dominated the previously unbeaten Arthur Abraham but wound up winning under truly bizarre circumstances.
Ahead on points, Dirrell slipped on a painted advertisement on the ring canvas in the 11th round and fell to the ground. While he was on one knee, Abraham unloaded a right hand and knocked Dirrell out. Abraham was immediately disqualified.
However, Dirrell, still unsure of his surroundings believed that he was knocked out and lost the fight. He was emotional and crying in his corner after the fight. And while his promoter and cornermen tried to tell him that he won, Dirrell could not comprehend what was going on. As the Showtime telecast ended, he was being taken to a hospital for observation.
It was the second time in the fight that the slick logo gave Dirrell trouble.
Nice to see Thomas Hearns. The Dirrell-Abraham fight was contested at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Showtime cameras picked up Hearns before the fight. It was in that same arena that Hearns knocked out Pipino Cuevas to win the welterweight crown.
