Gennady Golovkin may say he sole focus is on Matthew Macklin, but in the back of his mind he’s certainly thinking about a possible fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Felix Sturm. It wouldn’t be a shock if Sergio Martinez was part of his long term plans.
Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs) will square off against Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Ct. on June 29 as part of an HBO Boxing After Dark triple header.
Thomas Oosthuizen (21-0-1, 13 KOs) will take on Brandon Gonzalez (17-0, 10 KOs) in a super middleweight fight, while Willie Nelson (20-1-1, 12 KOs) will entertain Luciano Cuello (32-2, 16 KOs) in a junior middleweight battle.
“My only focus is on Matthew Macklin on Saturday, June 29, nothing else,” Golovkin said from his training camp in Big Bear.
Golovkin tipped his hand, however, when he mentioned Chavez Jr., Felix Sturm and IBF middleweight champ Daniel Geale as possible opponents. “I know that Chavez Jr., Geale and Sturm have fights coming up,” he said. “I will fight any of them. I want to fight the best and challenge myself always.”
Geale is fighting Darren Barker on August 17, so Golovkin will have to wait for that. Sturm will take on Predrag Radosevic on July 6 in Germany.
A bout against Chavez Jr. will likely have to wait, too. Chavez Jr., fresh off a nine-month suspension after testing positive for marijuana last year, is reportedly looking for a rematch with Martinez.
