Golden Boy to promote fights at new Brooklyn arena

This is good news for local fight fans and will hopefully serve as a platform for the many young Brooklyn fighters out there.

From the AP:  Golden Boy Promotions, run by Oscar de la Hoya, has signed a strategic
agreement to bring at least 12 boxing shows per year to the New Jersey Nets’ future home in Brooklyn.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Los Angeles-based Golden Boy, and Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, which is behind the 22-acre Atlantic Yards  development. The centerpiece of it, the 18,000-seat Barclays Center, is scheduled to open in 2012.

The agreement is exclusive in the fact that Golden Boy will not have any similar agreements with arenas in the New York area, but Brooklyn Sports president Brett Yormark said that doesn’t mean the facility will not collaborate with local promoters.

Many promoters were concerned that the new agreement would hurt
their ability to promote fights in New York.
