Six days ago, Kathy Clancy Burke lost her dad, Gil Clancy.
And while her family and the boxing world mourned the passing of the hall-of-fame trainer and award-winning television commentator, Kathy was privately contemplating whether or not to uphold a family tradition. Starting in 1988, Kathy and Gil began calling the finals of the New York Golden Gloves tournament for the MSG Network.
Her initial feeling was to pass on this year's broadcast.
But than Kathy spoke with Arthur Mercante Jr., who lost his hall-of-fame father in April of last year. Arthur's response to Kathy was simply, "What would dad say?"
So, Kathy decided to honor the memory of her father by calling the Golden Gloves finals on April 7 and 8. She will be doing the female bouts for the broadcast. On the opening night, she will be working with Mike Crispino and recently retired middleweight contender John Duddy. On the second night, she'll be paired with Duddy and Sam Rosen, one of Gil's longtime broadcast partners. WFAN's Tony Paige will be doing the men's bouts.
