Nate "the Galaxy Warrior" Campbell has had an interesting career. And things got even more interesting after his fight against Timothy Bradley last August was ruled a no contest.
It was a disappointing finish for Campbell, who had won his previous five fights, including a huge split-decision win over Juan Diaz. That win put Campbell (33-5, 25 KOs) back into the limelight.
Campbell won't have it easy tonight against Victor Ortiz (26-2-1, 21 KOs). Ortiz was badly outclassed in a knockout loss to Marcos Rene Maidana last June. But he recovered with two wins over Antonio Diaz and Hector Alatorre.
A win for Campbell could mean another date with Tim Bradley or maybe a shot at Devon Alexander. But time could be running out for the 38-year-old veteran.
Round 1: Victor Ortiz was the more active of the two fighters as he landed a few solid combinations. Campbell tried to pick and choose his moments. But he paid for it as Ortiz scored what was a questionable knockdown toward the end of the round. Ortiz wins 10-8.
Round 2: Campbell's age could be catching up with him. Ortiz peppered him with jabs and body shots through the first 1:30 of the round. Campbell landed a sharp jab with a little less than 1:30 left in the round, but Ortiz regained his composure. Ortiz is also a bit stronger than Campbell and is muscling him inside. Ortiz ended the round with a solig overhand right. Ortiz wins 10-9.
Round 3: Ortiz really hurt Campbell at the 2:10 mark with a sharp uppercut. He followed that with another uppercut and a sharp lead right. Ortiz landed another uppercut and an overhand right with about a minute left. Campbell is trying to get inside, but he's getting tagged everytime he gets close. Campbell finally landed a sharp right with about 15 seconds left. But it was too little, too late. Ortiz wins 10-9.
Round 4: Campbell is stil chasing Ortiz, but to no avail. Ortiz landed a solid three-shot combo at the 2:15 mark. Campbell still has energy, but nothing on his punches. Ortiz is backing up and daring Campbell to come inside. He made him pay for it again at the 1:45 mark. Ortiz landed a crushing body shot with 40 seconds left. Ortiz wins 10-9.
Round 5: Ortiz landed a hard lead left and followed that up with a nice overhand right. Campbell looked as if he might actually take this round, untinl Ortiz landed that left. Ortiz landed two good combos and another left jab. Campbell came back with a nice lead right, but Ortiz shook it off. Ortiz had Campbell up against the ropes and picked him apart for about 10 seconds. Ortiz wins 10-9.
AFTER FIVE ROUNDS, ORTIZ LEADS 50-44
Round 6:Campbell looked for the first minute. But Ortiz landed a vicious left and had Campbell against the ropes. Campbell landed a solid right, but Ortiz answered with a jab-overhand combo at the 1:10 mark. Ortiz wins 10-9.
Round 7: This round was a carbon copy of the last six. Ortiz is sticking and moving, while Campbell continues to chase. At 38 you have to wonder how much more Campbell as left. He's in great condition, but he's been chasing Ortiz for a long time now. Ortiz wins 10-9.
Round 8: Campbell keeps lunging with his left jab, which essentially diminishes its power. It was a less active round for Ortiz, who should be head by a lot on the judge's scorecards. Campbell landed a solid left hook with about 10 seconds left and may have stole a round. Campbell wins 10-9.
Round 9: Campbell started out well, but Ortiz finished even better. Campbell landed three good shots, but Ortiz landed about 10. Ortiz edges past Campbell 10-9.
Round 10: Ortiz wrapped this one up in a nice little bow. Ortiz wins 10-9.
I scored it 100-89.
The judges scored the bout 100-89 (twice), 99-90 all in favor of Victor Ortiz.
This could be the end for Campbell and the beginning for the 23-year-old Ortiz. Ortiz was crisp, fast and accurate. Campbell just couldn't catch up with Ortiz. And when he did, Ortiz made him pay for it.
