Here are picks from the Newsday staff on Saturday's welterweight showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey:
Greg Logan: Got a funny feeling Manny Pacquiao is going to give blood after all against a big man who is a hard puncher. Pacman is worried about too many other things (i.e. Floyd Mayweather and running for the Philippines senate) instead of concentrating on his opponent. Clottey by unanimous decision.
Marcus Henry: This is probably more of an intriguing matchup than most people think. Manny Pacquiao, who dominated Miguel Cotto, has proven he can deal with power punchers, quick fighters and everything in between. He'll be facing a fighter in Joshua Clottey who does a little bit of everything. The problem with Clottey is the total lack of aggression he shows at times. It happened last June in his fight against Cotto. Cotto was hurt, but Clottey didn't take advantage. If Clottey sits back against Pacquiao, he can forget about it. Look for Pacquiao to try and take advantage of any lack of fire Clottey shows early in the fight. In the end it will be another win for Pacquiao in the 116-112, 118-110 range.
Mike Rose: Clottey will stick around early by using his jab to control the tempo. But Pacquiao is too strong and too fast. Eventually, Pacquiao will catch Clottey and it will be over, probably around the eighth round by TKO.
Jose Moreno: Freddie Roach says Joshua Clottey will suffer his first knockout at the hands of Manny Pacquiao. I don’t see this happening. Clottey’s never come close to getting beat down, with his 3 loses coming by way of split decisions. Pacquiao’s speed and weird-angle punches will be nullified by Clottey’s impenetrable turtle-shell style defense. Pacquiao will still win by unanimous decision, but just because of the sheer number of punches he will land on a closed-up conservative Clottey.
Mario Gonzalez: I think this will be a tough fight for Pacquaio but I believe his impressive streak of victories will continue. I think it will go the distance... I pick Pacquaio by unanimous decision.
Bobby Cassidy: I love Greg Logan's pick. I think he's dead on about Pacquiao. I just don't love Clottey as much as I love the fact that Greg picked him. In Clottey's two biggest fights -- decision losses to Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto -- Clottey did just enough to lose impressively. After those fights, the tendency is to sit back and say, Wow, Clottey is a good fighter, sooner or later, he'll win the big one. Unfortunately, it's still later. This will be a tough fight, one that Pac Man cannot take lightly. But in the end, his quickness will be too much. Pac Man takes control in Round 9 (as Clottey fades) and cruises to a unanimous decision win.
