Is a potential mega bout between super bantamweight stars Nonito Donaire and Abner Mares in jeopardy?
If promotional giants Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions can’t get on the same page, the fight may not happen. (Where have we heard this one before?).
Top Rank promotes Donaire, while Golden Boy has a promotional deal with Mares. The companies have been at odds with each other the last several years and it doesn’t look as if the animosity between the two has dissipated.
At issue is who will be the main promoter of a Donaire-Mares fight. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer is reportedly set to offer Top Rank a hefty sum to allow them to promote the fight, according to BoxingScene.com.
“I will pay Top Rank $3 million, and I don’t know what kind of deal they have with Donaire,” Schaefer told BoxingScene.com. “Probably 50-50, so [Top Rank boss Bob] Arum can pay Donaire $1.5 million and he can make $1.5 million, but I don’t care how they split up the $3 million.”
The disagreement began when BoxingScene reported that Arum was in negotiations with Golden Boy to promote a Donaire-Mares fight. Schaefer denied there were any negations between him and Arum.
Schaefer said Arum was negotiating with Mares’ manager Frank Espinoza, according to BoxingScene.com.
It’s just another example of one of the many issues boxing faces. Golden Boy and Top Rank could never get together for a Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight. It looks as if that bout won’t happen.
Even if it does happen, the fight has lost all of its buzz and momentum. Will the same become of Donaire-Mares? Stay tuned.
