The news of Joseph Agbeko withdrawing from Showtime's Bantamweight tournament because of a back injury was a huge blow. But that won't stop the show from going on.
Instead of Agbeko vs. Abner Mares in the main event, we'll see Vic Darchinyan and Yonnhy Perez fight for the vacant IBO world bantamweight championship on Saturday night at 10:30 on Showtime.
"I feel bad for Joseph Agbeko and wish him the best. It’s unfortunate but sometimes things just happen," Darchinyan said. "What everyone should know is that they are going to get is a great fight. We will put on a great show."
This isn't the first time Darchinyan has been elevated to main event status. It's actually the third time. The other times came on March 6, 2010 (against Rodrigo Guerrero) and June 3, 2006 (against Luis Maldonado).
Perez also had kind words for Agbeko, who was diagnosed with sciatica.
“[Wednesday] night before I went to bed I said a prayer for Agbeko because he’s a champion like I was and I know he does this for his family," said Perez. "I know how difficult it must be to not be able to perform Saturday night."
