Floyd Mayweather Jr. is back, according to his verified Twitter account.
The undefeated weltwerweight announced he will take on WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz on September 17. The venue was not included in Mayweather's Twitter statement.
"My fans have been waiting long enough," Mayweather's Twitter account stated. "Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz. September 17 for the WBC world championship."
It's a long time coming for Mayweather (41-0), who hasn't fought since dominating Shane Mosley on May 1, 2010. Ortiz (29-2-2) is coming off the biggest win of his career, a unanimous-decision win over Andre Berto for the WBC welterweight title last April 16.
The question is will this lead to a Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao bout sometime next May. It's possible, especially considering that Top Rank and Golden Boy, which has co-promoted several of Mayweather's bouts, have buried the hatchet.
