New York State Athletic Commission chairwoman Melvina Lathan on Friday issued a statement paying tribute to referee Wayne Kelly, 63, of Garden City, who died suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday. Here is Lathan's statement:

"We are all shocked and saddened by the loss of such an esteemed colleague and wonderful friend. Wayne was one of New York's finest referees. A true professional, always in command of the ring. He was the ref all other referees admired and strived to be. Wayne was loved by all and will be truly missed."
