Briefs: Carson Palmer era over in Oakland

NFL

Raiders acquire QB Flynn

The Raiders acquired Seattle backup quarterback Matt Flynn Monday for draft picks, bringing an end to Carson Palmer's brief tenure as starter in Oakland.

The Raiders will send a fifth-round pick in 2014 and a conditional pick in 2015 to the Seahawks. Flynn will compete with Terrelle Pryor for the starting job.

Fox Sports reported Palmer was expected to be dealt to Arizona for a draft pick. The Cardinals released QB John Skelton, who started 17 games for the team over the past three seasons, in anticipation of getting Palmer.

Browns trade QB McCoy to 49ers

Cleveland has traded quarterback Colt McCoy to San Francisco for undisclosed draft picks. A source said the Browns will get fifth- and seventh-round picks in this month's NFL draft for McCoy and Cleveland's sixth-round pick. The Browns selected McCoy in the third round of the 2010 draft.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

USC hires FGCU coach Enfield

USC has hired Andy Enfield as coach after he took Florida Gulf Coast to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The 43-year-old coach was 41-28 in his two seasons at the Fort Myers, Fla., school. Enfield takes over from interim coach Bob Cantu, who had a 7-8 record after succeeding Kevin O'Neill, who was fired in mid-January . . . Tubby Smith agreed to terms with Texas Tech to be its next coach, according to a source. Interim coach Chris Walker went 11-20 this season as the program tried to recover from Billy Gillispie's volatile one-year tenure. Smith was fired by Minnesota last week after six seasons.

AP All-Americans selected

Creighton's Doug McDermott, second in Division I scoring at 23.1 points per game, was selected to the AP All-America team for the second year in a row. Trey Burke of Michigan and Otto Porter Jr. of Georgetown tied as leading vote-getters for first team. Victor Oladipo of Indiana and Kelly Olynyk of Gonzaga were the others selected.

NHL

Canadiens top Hurricanes

Carey Price made 18 saves in his 300th NHL game and Max Pacioretty scored twice to lead host Montreal to a 4-1 win over Carolina. With the loss, the Hurricanes are tied for 10th in the Eastern Conference, three points behind the Rangers and Islanders.

HORSE RACING

No Derby for Shanghai Bobby

Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Shanghai Bobby won't run in the Kentucky Derby because his energy level isn't where trainer Todd Pletcher thinks it should be. The colt ran fifth Saturday in the Florida Derby. Last year's undefeated 2-year-old champion will be rested at Payton Training Center in Ocala, Fla. -- AP
