Can't Knock Oportunity

Cincinnati -Hall of Famer Joe Morgan is pretty sure

congratulations are in order. For the most part. Having faithfully called on

baseball to hire minorities as managers, Morgan said yesterday: "I'm happy

Davey Lopes has a job, and Don Baylor. They're not good jobs, but they have

jobs."

He smiled when he said it. "At least they have an opportunity," said the

former Reds second baseman, who will watch his old team host Lopes' Brewers in

the opener today.

"Maybe he'll show that he's a pretty good manager," Morgan said. Referring

to Lopes' predecessor in Milwaukee, he added: "Maybe he'll be like Phil Garner:

lose for seven years and then get a better job." -Mark Herrmann
