BCS National Championship: Final -- Alabama 37, Texas 21

No. 1 Alabama won its first national title since 1992, beating No. 2 Texas 37-21 to claim the BCS National Championship at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

Texas trailed 24-21 with 3:14 to go, but had momentum and the ball at its own 17 with suddenly hot freshman quarterback Garrett Gilbert playing with confidence. But Alabama, which didn't have a sack all night, called a blitz at the perfect time. Eryk Anders sacked Gilbert and Courtney Upshaw recoved at the 3. Heisman winner Mark Ingram scored a 1-yard touchdown run three plays later to seal the win.

Gilbert threw an incomplete pass on Texas' next possession and was then intercepted by Javier Arenas at the Longhorns' 27. Trent Richardson ran three straight times and scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. The extra point was no good, but Alabama had the national championship.

Alabama sat on its 24-6 halftime throughout the third quarter. The Crimson Tide had three possessions in the third quarter, all three-and-outs. But Texas' defense really stepped up to keep Alabama at 24 points.

Meanwhile, Gilbert, who filled in admirably after Colt McCoy left the game in the first quarter with a right shoulder injury, settled down and gained confidence  Gilbert found Jordan Shipley, who beat Arenas, for a 44-yard touchdown. The extra point made it 24-13 late in the third quarter.

Texas recovered the onside kick, but couldn't do anything with that possession.

Shipley again got into 1-on-1 coverage and caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Gilbert in the fourth quarter. Gilbert hit Dan Buckner for the two-point conversion and Texas was within 24-21 with 6:15 to go.

Gilbert ended up 15 of 40 for 186 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Shipley, who had just one catch in the first half, ended up with 10 catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

Alabama, which did not use quarterback Greg McElroy to throw much, ran for 205 yards in the game. Ingram had 116 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, and Richardson had 109 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. McElroy completed 6 of 11 passes for 58 yards.
