Yes, we know college basketball in the New York metro area has been a sore subject for much of this decade.
Outside of a few sporadic appearances, no local team has made a splash in the NCAA Tournament. St. John's, Hofstra or whatever team from the New York Metro area you can name has been a bit of a dud. This year there are a couple of local teams -St. John's (10-2), Seton Hall (9-2)- that have stepped up their play.
In response to this resurgence, we are going to add a new feature to the blog. Every Monday we will release a top-10 poll (picked by local college basketball writers and broadcasters) of the area's top mens basketball programs.
The following teams are eligible for the poll: St. John's, Hofstra, Stony Brook, Wagner, Iona, Fordham, Manhattan, Columbia, LIU, St. Francis NY, Rutgers, Seton Hall, FDU, St. Peter's, Rider, Army, Princeton, NJIT, Monmouth and Fairfield.
You may wonder why UConn, Marist, Syracuse, Colgate, St. Bonaventure and Cornell aren't included. Those schools are over 75 miles away from NYC and not part of the coverage area.
So get ready for Monday fans, you may find some surprises.
