Bracketbuster winners and losers

Butler's Mascot

Butler - The Bulldogs benefited greatly from their 70-53 handling of Siena on Saturday. Butler (25-4, 17-0 Horizon), already a lock for the tournament, is looking to improve its seeding for the tournament.

Northern Iowa - Northern Iowa's 71-62 win over Old Dominion was just what it needed. The Panthers (24-3, 11-2 Missouri Valley Conference), with wins over Siena and Boston College, were probably already a lock. But beating a good Old Dominion team, which is on the bubble itself, probably sealed the deal.

Iona - The Gaels (20-8, 11-5 MAAC) aren't a lock for the NCAA tournament and aren't even a bubble team. But their 69-53 win over William & Mary will give them the confidence needed to make a run in the MAAC tournament.

Northeastern - The way things look now the CAA will get two teams in the tournament. Old Dominion is on the bubble, but should get in. Northeastern (18-10, 13-3 CAA) took care of business with a 70-67 win over Louisiana Tech. But the Huskies can't afford to slip up down the stretch. A loss before the CAA championship game could take them off the bubble list.

Murray State - The Racers (26-3, 16-0 OVC) aren't a bubble team, but beating a decent Morgan State team could ensure a 15 or even a 14 seed assuming they win the OVC tourney. Last year the OVC champ had to honor of participating in the play-in game. For those questioning Morgan State's validity, Todd Bozeman's crew has a win over Arkansas and lost to Louisville by just nine.

Siena - Losing to Butler may have ended Siena's at-large hopes. Siena (22-6, 15-1 MAAC) had a chance on national TV to really show the country it was one of the country's top mid-major teams. But Siena fans shouldn't get too down, because the Saints could still end up in the tourney even if they don't win the MAAC tourney. How? If enough of the country's regular-season conference champions win their tournaments, there could be room for the Saints.

Wichita State - The Shockers (22-7, 11-5) built up a nice resume with wins over Texas Tech and Northern Iowa. But losing at Utah State last weekend was a killer. Wichita State is going to be in the same boat as Siena come selection Sunday.

Old Dominion - The Monarchs (21-8, 13-3 CAA) have big wins over Georgetown and Charlotte to brag about. Is it enough to get them an at-large bid? Probably. Losing to Northern Iowa didn't help, but beating the Hoyas put them on another level.

Utah State - Beating Wichita State was big for Utah State (22-6, 11-2 WAC). The Aggies, despite a 10-point home win over BYU, were not a bubble team. This win might have vaulted them into the at-large conversation. Make no mistake about it, the Aggies can't lose before the WAC title game.
