Can you say overkill? Tennessee mens basketball coach Bruce Pearl, already on the hook with his school and the NCAA for rules violations, got hit with eight-game suspension by the SEC.
Pearl admitted that he misled NCAA investigators about photos taken of him and recruit Aaron Craft. Pearl improperly had Craft at his home in 2008. Tennessee also said Pearl and his assistant called recruits excessively.
SEC commissioner Mike Slive was given authority to give suspensions during the SEC's spring meetings. According to an AP report, Slive sent a letter Thursday informing Pearl he cannot participate in SEC games between Jan. 8 and Feb. 5 and any related activity or practice on those game days.
Tennessee already punished Pearl, banning him from off-campus recruiting for a year and docking his salary $1.5 million over the duration of his contract.
Making matters worse for Pearl is that the NCAA has yet to issue a final ruling. The collegiate governing body could hand out its own punishment.
