Duke Tops West Virginia 78-57 and advances to championship game

This game was all about Duke's defense. The Blue Devils were marvelous in shutting down the Mountaineers. West Virginia shot just 41 percent from the field. Wellington Smith led Bob Huggins' crew with 12 points. That certainly wasn't enough to beat a solid Duke team. Losing Da'Sean Butler was a blow for the Mountaineers, although the senior guard had just 10 points on 2-for-8 shooting at the time of his injury (8:59 left in the second half).

Offensively Duke's big three of Jon Scheyer (23 points), Kyle Singler (21 points) and Nolan Smith (19 points) came up huge. Duke won the battle on the boards, 26-19, and had just six turnovers. It was really a lesson in basketball efficiencey.

Duke will take on Butler in the championship game on Monday night at 9 p.m.

Duke has put this one away, leading 75-57 with 1:00 left.

Nothing has changed over the last few minutes. With Butler out of the game, the Mountaineers have nothing for the Blue Devils. Duke leads 69-57 with 3:39 left. But there's still time for one more West Virginia push.

Duke is in control, leading 67-52 with 7:07 left. But West Virginia suffered a huge blow to its chances at a comeback as Da'Sean Butler hurt his knee with 8:59 left in the game. Butler fell to the floor awkwardly while trying to connect on a layup. He had to be helped off the floor by teammates.

Duke's big really answered the call today. Nolan Smith has 19 points, while Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler have 18 points each.

It was the Kyle Singler show in the first half as the senior forward had 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting for Duke, which leads 39-31 at the half. Nolan Smith added 11 points for the Blue Devils.

Devin Ebanks (4-for-4) has nine points for West Virginia. Desean Butler has just two points on 1-for-5 shooting.

Things are beginning to pick now as Kyle Singler drained a three to give Duke a 21-14 lead with 9:39 left in the half. West Virginia came right back with a layup. Duke leads 23-16 with 8:25 left in the half. Singler clearly has the hot hand for the Blue Devils with 12 points.

Duke and West Virginia took a cue from Butler and Michigan State. With just under 14 minutes left Duke leads the Mountaineers 11-9.
