Gary Cohen’s winter job is not nearly as visible as his spring and summer one calling Mets games for SNY. But this has been a good season to be the radio play-by-play man for Seton Hall men’s basketball.
The Pirates are the No. 3 seed in the Big East Tournament this week and likely to land their first NCAA bid since 2006 — and only their third in Cohen’s 13 seasons calling their games.
“It’s been fantastic,” Cohen said. “I love doing college basketball anyway, even when the team is not great, but it has been a lot of fun. It’s been a long time since they’ve had a team this good, really since my first year in 2004 when they had Andre Barrett. That’s also the last time they won an NCAA Tournament game.
“This is the best team they’ve had since then. It’s a lot of fun.”
With Cohen in New York this week to do the games at the Garden, SNY veteran Gary Apple will call the Mets’ spring training games Wednesday against the Yankees and Thursday and Saturday against the Cardinals. In previous springs Kevin Burkhardt and even Ron Darling had filled in on play-by-play in March.
This week’s games will be the first major-league baseball games of any kind that Apple has called.
“It’s great,” he said. “I’m very excited about it.”
