For South Florida to stand any chance against a taller, more physical Georgetown team, Dominique Jones had to be on his game.
Unfortunately for the Bulls, he wasn’t.
Jones, one of the top scorers in the Big East, had a dismal afternoon, shooting just 6-for-18 from the floor including 0-for-5 from three-point range for 21 points, as the eight-seeded Hoyas routed No. 9 South Florida, 69-49, in Wednesday’s second round.
Georgetown (21-9) – which got 16 points apiece from Jason Clark and Greg Monroe and 15 from Chris Wright -- will face rival No. 1 Syracuse in Thursday’s noon quarterfinal.
South Floriday (20-12) pulled to within six (35-29) with 16:52 left, but the Hoyas were just too big, too physical and too talented.
The Bulls, which trailed 31-19 at halftime, shot just 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from the floor in the first half. As a team, they were 16-of-55 (29.1 percent) for the game.
Jones, the Big East scoring title winner who scored 20 points and had nine rebounds in South Florida's 58-49 victory over DePaul Tuesday, had no help from his teammates on offense. While Jones scores 12 of the team’s 19 first-half points, while the rest of the Bulls shot just 3-of-18 in the half.
