The Iona men’s basketball program suffered a devastating loss on Thursday when 2012-2013 recruit Michael Haynes was shot and killed.

The 6-7 forward from Chicago was shot while trying to break up a fight over a necklace, according to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times.

“The Iona family is devastated with the news on Michael’s passing,” Iona coach Tim Cluess said on the Iona website. “His passion, energy and excitement for his opportunity this year makes this tragedy even more upsetting. Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Haynes, a graduate of Fenger Academy in Chicago, spent two seasons at Indian Hills CC in Iowa. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds at Indian Hills last year.
