Kansas State was too big and strong for North Texas. Denis Clemente (17 points), a cousin of Roberto Clemente, led four players in double figures for the Wildcats in an 82-62 win. Jacob Pullen and Curtis Kelly each had 15 points and Dominique Sutton added 12 points. The Wildcats won the battle in the paint with their superior size. KSU outrebounded North Texas, 39-32, and blocked 10 shots.
Omar Samhan (29 pts, 12 reb) had his way with Richmond. So did Mickey McConnell, who paced the Gaels' backcourt with 18 points (4-for-8 from three-point range). St. Mary's, an 80-71 winner over Richmond, will take on Villanova in round 2. It's St. Mary's first tourney win since 1959.
