Michigan State tops Tennessee 70-69 on late free throw

It was the gritty Michigan State Spartans once again. Raymar Morgan drained a free throw with 1 second left to lift the Spartans to their second straight Final Four and for the sixth time in 12 seasons.

Michigan State will take on Butler in a National semifinal next weekend.

Is there any doubt who the hottest coach in college basketball is today? Michigan State's Tom Izzo is the best. That includes Coach K, Jim Calhoun, Roy Williams, etc...

If you look up and down Michigan State's roster, you don't see any NBA Lottery picks. In fact, you don't see any first round picks. And their best player, Kalin Lucas has missed the last two games. Another key player, Chris Allen, has been limited because of a leg injury. It just doesn't get any better than Tom Izzo.

As for the game, the Spartans second-half defense was awsome. Wayne Chism, who had 10 points at the half, finished with just 13 for the game. The Volunteers had several support players step up, but they needed Chism to be the man. And he wasn't in the second half.

Michigan State's Durrell Summers made a statement today. The junior guard finished with 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting. He hit 4 of 6 three-pointers, too.

Tennessee heads into the lockerroom with a 41-39 lead.

Balance has been the name of the game for the Volunteers. Chism has 10 points, while Cameron Tatum and Melvin Goins have seven points each. Tennessee is shooting 6-for-9 from three-point range, which also helps their cause.

Michigan State is also distributing the ball well. Summers has 10 points, Raymar Morgan has eight and Draymond Green has seven points.

It's still a nail-biter folks. Tennessee leads 34-33 with 3:36 left in the half. Four players from Tennessee have at least five points. The Vols have been like that all season, though. None of their players averaged more than 12.6 points this year.

Tennessee has done an excellent job spreading the ball around. Chism has eight points and Cameron Tatum has seven points for the Volunteers, who lead Michigan State 30-27 with 7:02 left in the first. Durrell Summers has 10 points for the Spartans.

It's been back-and-forth so far. Tennessee has edged ahead, 26-22, with 10:24 left in the first half. Wayne Chism has two three-pointers for the Volunteers.

Both teams are down a man. Michigan's Kalin Lucas is out with a torn ACL, while Tyler Smith was dismissed from the Volunteers earlier this season.
