No.1 Syracuse rolls past No.8 Gonzaga 87-65, goes to Sweet 16

It was a career day for Wes Johnson, who finished with a career-high 31 points and 14 rebounds. As well as Johnson player, Andy Rautins was the spark, finishing with 24 points. He hit four of his five three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Syracuse broke the game wide open on its way to an 87-65 win. Syracuse will face Butler in the Sweet 16.

Brandon Triche was also efficient. The Freshman guard finished with 13 points. Syracuse went 12-for-25 from three-point range, compated ot Gonzaga which drained just 3 of 21 attempts. Elias Harris had 24 points, while West Coast Conference player of the year Matt Bouldin had just eight points.

Syracuse big man Rick Jackson picked up his third foul in the first half. But  Gonzaga digressed big time after that as the Orange are on a 49-20 run since the 10:15 mark of the first half.

Syracuse dominated the final 10 minutes of the first half. After an Elias Harris layup cut Syracuse's lead to 22-21 with 10:15 left, the Orange went on a 25-11 run to end the half for a 47-32 halftime lead. Wes Johnson had 15 points and Brandon Triche added 13 for the Orange. Gonzaga began the half well, but only Elias Harris (16 points) is playing consistent basketball.

Syracuse is shooting well enough to keep Gonzaga at arm's length. Wes Johnson, Scoop Jardine, Brandon Triche and Andy Rautins are shooting it great. But they must work the ball inside a little more. Wes Johnson just drained a three, extending Syracuse's lead to 41-28 with 1:48 left in the half.
