Shante Evans scores 15 in Hofstra loss to Texas

Nneka Enemkpali had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead Texas in a 72-52 triumph over Hofstra in women's basketball Saturday in the WBI Tip-Off Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Chassidy Fussell added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Longhorns, who pulled away with a 42-18 second half.

Shante Evans had 15 points and six rebounds, and Candace Bond had 10 points and two steals for Hofstra (1-1), which earned a split in the tournament after defeating Stetson in the season opener. Texas improved to 2-0.

The Longhorns, who were ranked fifth in the Big 12 preseason poll, had a 62-31 rebounding advantage and dominated the paint in the second half.

Deven Green's layup gave the Pride a 36-30 lead with 19:43 remaining in the second half, but Texas took control from there.

Fussell, who was the Big 12's second-leading scorer last season, had 12 points in the second half. Enemkpali's layup put Texas ahead 40-38 with 17:19 left during an 18-2 run that seized momentum.

The Longhorns led by as many as 72-50 after Brady Sanders' layup with 2:38 to go.

Cokie Reed added 11 points and six rebounds, and Celina Rodrigo had four assists, six rebounds and three steals for Texas.

Freshman Asia Jackson scored eight points and had three of Hofstra's six total assists. The Pride did force 22 Texas turnovers.

Hofstra will next visit No. 14 St. John's on Saturday. The Red Storm lost to Texas on Friday in its WBI opener.
