Wednesday night was critical for Seton Hall and Rutgers. Both teams had gotten off to strong starts and had big games against Connecticut and West Virginia, respectively.
Both struck out in their bid to make early waves in the Big East.
It wasn't as bad for Seton Hall, which actually held a lead over Connecticut late in the second half before falling 71-63. But Rutgers was blitzed by the Mountaineers, 86-52.
It doesn't mean the season is over for both teams, but local basketball fans will now focus their attention on the rest of the Big East. Seton Hall (9-5, 0-3 Big East) is in a deep conference hole, while Rutgers (9-5, 0-2) is getting close to that point of no return.
There's still enough time for both teams to recover, but it won't be easy.
