Loyola Marymount vs. No.20 UCLA was not on my list of games to watch. My apologies to any Loyola Marymount fans that felt slighted, but the thought never crossed my mind.
Seriously, Loyola Marymount upsetting UCLA? Well, it happened on Friday night as the Lions used a late 12-0 run to stun the Bruins, 69-58, at the Los Angeles Sports Arena (Pauley Pavilion is being renovated).
This isn’t your father’s Loyola Marymount squad of the late 1980s and early 1990s with Bo Kimble and the late Hank Gathers. This isn’t the Loyola Marymount squad that used to score a million points a game. But this Loyola Marymount squad tried to emulate that crew and did a decent job, shooting 10-for-15 from three-point range in its win.
Whether or not this is a flash-in-the-pan win for the Lions is anyone's guess. Early season upsets do happen in college basketball. So this probably won't be the last upset.
