Spent 26 seasons as an NFL assistant and a head coach, earning Super Bowl rings with the 1968 Jets (linebackers coach) and 1985 Bears (defensive coordinator).

Helped change how defense is played. The multiple blitz packages of his "46" defense emphasized attacking the quarterback with more players than could be blocked.

Had limited success as head coach of the Eagles (1986-90) and Cardinals (1994-95), compiling a 55-55-1 record and going 0-3 in the playoffs with Philadelphia.

Gave his twin sons, Rex and Rob, their starts in the NFL with the 1994 Cardinals, naming Rex linebackers/defensive line coach and Rob defensive backs coach.

Rob was Bill Belichick's linebackers coach for the champion 2001 and 2003 Patriots, and Rex coached the defensive line for the Super Bowl-winning 2000 Ravens.
