Derek Victory's 50-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Groff with 12 seconds left in the third quarter proved to be the difference, as Coast Guard defeated USMMA, 42-31, in non-conference play yesterday.
Victory's catch gave Coast Guard (1-1) a 35-31 lead. Groff and Victory connected again with 5:20 left. USMMA (1-1) led by as much as two touchdowns on Mario Colangelo's 12-yard run midway through the second quarter. Coast Guard tied the game at 28 on Collis Brown's 31-yard scoring reception, but Erik Swayne's 21-yard field goal with 2:08 left in the third gave the Mariners a short-lived lead.
LIU Post 38, New Haven 33: Steve Laurino's 1-yard dive with 10 minutes left gave Post the lead for good. New Haven (0-2, 0-1 Northeast-10) led 30-24 going into the fourth quarter before Laurino's 20-yard TD pass to Shane Hubbard. Laurino was 32-for-50 for 296 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for three TDs. Jhaleel Oswald had 11 tackles. Post is 1-1, 1-0.
