First place in the conference depended on the foot of Karsten Viste.

But his 41-yard field-goal attempt as time expired was no good as American International defeated host LIU Post, 27-24, Saturday to move to the top of the Northeast-10 conference standings.

AIC (6-2, 6-1) had taken the lead on Kevin Arduino's 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 29 seconds remaining. That capped a 14-play, 65-yard drive.

Post got the ball back at its own 35 with only 23 seconds left. Then Steven Laurino, who completed 32 of 51 passes for 353 yards and one touchdown, hit Shane Hubbard for 11 yards, then James Higgins for 15 yards and Higgins again for 15 yards to put the ball at the AIC 24-yard line to give Viste a chance.

Laurino caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver James Higgins on an end-around to give LIU Post a 24-20 lead with 3:51 left, on the first play after Anthony Brunetti returned an interception 31 yards to the AIC 37.

Marcel DePina's 35-yard touchdown run put AIC ahead 20-10 with 9:20 left in the fourth.

Laurino connected with Hubbard for a 23-yard touchdown, at the end of a 10-play, 81-yard drive, with 5:35 to go to pull the Pioneers within 20-17.

Hubbard had nine catches for 123 yards. Sean Binckes added 75 yards on seven catches. Higgins had five catches for 63 yards.

Laurino ran for 46 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown run that cut the Pioneers' deficit to 14-10 with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter.
