The skinny on NFL's new overtime rules for playoffs

Starting in next season's NFL playoffs, if a team wins the coin toss and kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball. If the game is still tied after that possession, play will continue under the traditional sudden-death rules.

Should the team winning the toss immediately score a touchdown, then the game is over.

The team that kicks off in overtime could win the game on a defensive touchdown on the first possession, or if it registers a safety.
