Fearless prediction: Sugar Bowl

Sugar Bowl

No. 13 Michigan vs. No. 11 Virginia Tech (+3), 8:30 p.m.: Of all the bowl selections this season, the Sugar Bowl has probably been the most debated. Michigan and Virginia Tech were selected ahead of other at-large teams such as Boise State, Baylor and Kansas State. Still, this match up should be a good one. Virginia Tech’s defense was 15th nationally in the regular season, allowing just 314 totals yards per game. The Hokies will need solid defense to stop Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, who passed for 2,056 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 1,163 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. Plus, running back Fitzgerald Touissaint has rushed for 1,011 yards and 9 touchdowns. However, iMichigan’s defense has had the huge impact this season. The Wolverines’ defense was bad during the Rich Rodriguez era, but improved drastically this season under first-year head coach Brady Hoke. Michigan was 17th nationally in the regular season, giving up 318 total yards per game. Virginia Tech is coming off a bad 38-10 loss to Clemson in the ACC title game last month. The Hokies’ other loss this season also came against Clemson, a team that proved to be a bad match up for Virginia Tech. The Hokies have offensive firepower with quarterback Logan Thomas (2,799 yards and 19 touchdowns) and star running back David Wilson (1,627 yards and 9 touchdowns). Virginia Tech will play much better than it did in the ACC title game, but Michigan’s defense is going to be the difference. And look for Robinson to cause problems for the Virginia Tech defense. Michigan 24, Virginia Tech 20
